View near Bullhead City - Arizona looks as spectacular as we thought it would! |
We were a little disappointed about not having enough time to see Cars Land at Disney’s California Adventure before leaving the
state, but we soon realized on our way through the Arizona border that we had traded Radiator Springs and Ornament Valley for the real thing.
 |
A quick check of the car and everything looks fine. This rest stop informs us we are headed to Meteor Crater - the world's best preserved meteor crater. Will we make it before nightfall? |
 |
The Golf Ball house is accompanied by a UFO and an obligatory jerky stand (not pictured, partly because most jerky stands look the same). |
 |
Roadside formation. |
The
interstate skips along old Route 66 and every now and then we are met with an old
motor town. We stopped at the main drag
in Seligman, AZ for a snack and a stretch of the legs. Plenty of establishments on Route 66 have painted pupils on old junkers, seizing
the appeal of the Cars franchise.

Sawdust tableau. |
A
few books on roadside attractions recommended we visit Delgadillo’s
Sno-Cap. The fast food drive-in has a garden full
of junk and a menu full of puns. We
ordered a hot fudge sundae, then get haggled because it was clearly not Sunday. We were told we couldn’t have a unisex one
either – it had to be with nuts or without them. We got nuts.

Neon sign says: "Sorry, we're open." |
The tourist town is full of interesting eye-candy.
 |
Biker bar, the world famous kind. |
 |
Mexican food from a covered wagon. |
The road is lined with motels and shops full of patchy, rusty-tin nostalgia, glowing daytime neon, Marilyn Monroe lunchboxes and park bench approximations of Elvis Presley and James Dean.
 |
An example of a good Samaritan using a patriotic trash can. |
 |
Before continuing our journey, we got some regionally pressed pennies for our book. The Master Minter is hard at work. |
 |
Pinwheel, rooster, sidewalk, Chevy. |
 |
Somewhere between Seligman and Williams (and one of her many naps), Amy spots a penguin riding a bass fish in the clouds. |
Next stop, Williams, the next best thing to having an actual town inside the Grand Canyon.
